Do I Need a Hammer Drill? (And When a Regular Drill Is Fine)

What Does a Hammer Drill Actually Do?

A hammer drill combines two actions simultaneously: rotation (like a standard drill) and rapid percussion — a forward-backward hammering motion that strikes the bit thousands of times per minute. This dual action pulverizes masonry while the flutes on the bit carry dust out of the hole.

Think of it this way: a regular drill cuts through material. A hammer drill pulverizes and cuts at the same time. That percussion is what makes concrete, brick, and stone drillable.

Most cordless hammer drills let you toggle the hammer function on and off. With hammer mode off, it works identically to a regular drill/driver — so you get two tools in one.

When You Need a Hammer Drill

If any of these describe your project, a hammer drill (or SDS rotary hammer) is the right tool:

  • Drilling into concrete floors, walls, or foundations — For Tapcon screws, wedge anchors, sleeve anchors, or lead shields
  • Mounting into brick or cinder block — Shelf brackets, TV mounts, mailboxes, exterior fixtures
  • Installing masonry anchors — Red Heads, epoxy anchors, concrete screws
  • Drilling into natural stone — Granite, slate, limestone (use diamond-grit bits for harder stone)
  • Running electrical or plumbing through block walls — When you need clean holes for conduit or pipe
  • Any repetitive masonry drilling — A regular drill with a masonry bit might get through one hole after five minutes of struggling. A hammer drill does it in seconds.

Standard hammer drill vs SDS rotary hammer: For occasional anchor holes in concrete or brick, a standard cordless hammer drill is sufficient. For regular masonry work, large-diameter holes, or chipping/breaking concrete, step up to an SDS rotary hammer. The impact energy difference is enormous.

When You Don't Need a Hammer Drill

A hammer drill gives you no advantage on these materials — a regular drill works just as well or better:

  • Wood — Regular drill bits cut cleanly. Hammer action would damage the wood and the bit.
  • Drywall — You are drilling through gypsum and paper. Any drill handles this easily.
  • Metal — Requires cutting, not pulverizing. Use a regular drill with the right bit (cobalt or titanium) and cutting oil.
  • Plastic and PVC — Standard drill bits work perfectly. Hammer action would crack the material.
  • Tile and glass — The percussion will crack tile. Use a regular drill at low speed with a diamond or carbide bit.
  • General fastening — Driving screws, assembling furniture, hanging pictures — no hammer function needed.

If your project list is mostly wood, drywall, and general household tasks, a standard drill/driver is all you need. Many modern cordless drills include a hammer setting anyway, so you may already own one without realizing it.

Hammer Drill vs Rotary Hammer — What's the Difference?

This confuses a lot of people. Both drill into masonry, but they work differently and serve different levels of work:

If you are mounting things to brick or concrete regularly:

Get a dedicated hammer drill. The dedicated percussion mechanism hits harder and faster than the hammer mode on a combo drill. You will drill cleaner holes faster and burn through fewer masonry bits.

If you do regular masonry or concrete work:

Step up to an SDS rotary hammer. The difference in impact energy is night and day. An SDS drill handles large-diameter holes, deep holes, and sustained drilling that would overheat a standard hammer drill. Many also offer hammer-only mode for light chipping and tile removal — genuinely useful.

Do I need a hammer drill for concrete?

Yes. A regular drill will struggle or fail entirely on concrete. The hammer drill's percussive action chips away at the material while the bit rotates, making it possible to drill clean holes in concrete, cement block, and other masonry. For anything beyond a few small anchor holes, consider an SDS rotary hammer instead.

Can a regular drill go into brick?

A regular drill with a good masonry bit can handle soft brick for shallow, small-diameter holes (1/4" or less). But it will be slow, the bit will overheat, and you risk cracking the brick. A hammer drill makes the job dramatically easier and is the right tool for anything beyond occasional small holes in soft brick.

What's the difference between a hammer drill and an impact driver?

They do completely different things. A hammer drill adds a rapid in-and-out percussion (thousands of blows per minute) to rotation — designed for drilling into masonry. An impact driver adds rotational impacts (torque bursts) — designed for driving long screws and lag bolts. Neither substitutes for the other.

Do I need SDS for home use?
